'Greet The Pope' Plans May 9 Meet
The initial meeting of a group planning protests during Pope John Paul II's visit to Los Angeles this September was held April 5th. At that meeting participants voted to organize activities to oppose some of the Pope's views and his efforts to make those views public policy. Specifically cited were the Pope's condemnation of gays and lesbians; his opposition to equality for women, as well as free access to abortion, birth control, artificial insemination, sex education and AIDS prevention information and the Vatican's meddling in Latin America opposing people's struggle for self-determination. Various ways of highlighting these dangerous views were discussed at the meeting, including prayers for the Pope, candlelight vigils at the Catholic Cathedral, street theater, demonstrations during the Pope's parade and condom giveaways to Catholic school children. The committee is open to all who wish to protest the Pope, and currently includes, among others, gay and lesbian Christians and militant atheists, as well as activists from the reproductive rights, Central American solidarity and AIDS prevention movements. The next meeting of Committee to Greet the Pope is set for Saturday, May 9, 3 pm, at 1246 S. La Cienega (at Pico), Room 211. The May 9th meeting will continue plans for a proper welcome for Pope John Paul II.
